In an open innovation approach, the Group is partnering with innovative ecosystems to rapidly find tomorrow’s solutions. To this end, local African start-ups will be selected to co-develop innovative digital solutions in response to both strategic and operational mining challenges. OCP Group reinforces its position as an open innovation actor, supporting the development and promotion of the African entrepreneurial ecosystem. Are you a startup ready to take on new challenges? We are interested in your know-how and innovative solutions! An opportunity to benefit from the support of OCP Group, and their experts, to develop your project.
Take on OCP Group Challenges in the following 4 areas:
Phosphate layers come in different qualities and thicknesses. The objective of the extraction process is to take each layer separately with the greatest possible precision.
Mining operations, including transportation, can be significantly reduced by fog or dust. These shutdowns or slowdowns have a direct impact on operating costs.
Dragline operations today, while efficient, are not optimal due to the lack of information available (position, filling rate of the shovel, working angle, etc.). This challenge is focused on accessing information, in real time, for each machine and providing advice on the optimal operating modes.
The quality of the diagnosis depends on the maintenance agent’s experience and the mavhines’ data available to them in real time. This challenge is focused on optimizing the historical data of the machines to facilitate diagnoses in cases of breakdowns or preventative maintenance.

Demo Day – Pitch in front of a panel experts and OCP Group’s Top Management
June 21 – September 21 2019
The finalists will be able to participate in a development program
Any start-up registered in Africa or any start-up with a founder or cofounder from Africa or from the African diaspora community.
The OCP Mining Challenge gives you the opportunity to work closely with one of the world's largest mining groups.
By having access to the Benguerir experimental mine (in the region of Marrakesh, Morocco), you will be able to develop your solution at low cost: the experimentation costs are covered while also benefiting from the internal expertise of OCP.
In addition, if your solution is currently used in a sector other than the mining sector (industry or logistics, for example), but it can be adapted to meet the challenges of OCP Group, the Challenge gives you the opportunity to access a new business sector.
Call for applications: Following the submission of your online application, we will study the various applications and select up to 30 startups that best meet the criteria requested (quality of the team, adequacy of the solution, feasibility of a POC in 3 months and the innovative dimension of the solution).
Interviews: These 30 startups will participate in 30-minute interviews to validate the interest of and for the startup, the ability to be accompanied by the project team, and deepen the operationalization of the proposed solution. 12 to 15 startups will be selected afterwards.
Bootcamp: These startups will then be invited to participate in a one-week bootcamp (from June 18 2019) held at the Benguerir site (in the Marrakech region, Morocco). During the bootcamp, the startups will work in close collaboration with OCP Group's business experts to validate the adequacy of the solution with the needs and ambitions of the digital mine, in addition to defining an experimental action plan for the implementation of the solution internally.
Day Demo: A Demo Day will be organized on the last day of the bootcamp, during which a jury will select the 3 winning startups. These startups will then be able to participate in the acceleration program and implement their solution within the Group.
Acceleration: The 3 startups selected during the Demo Day will be invited to a 3 months acceleration program (from June 21 to September 21, 2019). They will be able to calibrate their solution in the field by following the rapid prototyping process. Start-ups will have access to OCP Group materials and data necessary for field testing, as well as to business experts.
You can fill out the registration form over several sessions. Your answers are saved automatically, and you can return to modify and / or complete your answers at your convenience by taking the link that will be sent to your mailbox. Do not forget to submit your application once you have finalized your form.
It is possible that the solution you propose answers several challenges. In this case, you only fill out one form.
If you have developed several solutions that answer different challenges, fill out one form per solution (with a maximum of 2 forms).
The call for applications will be closed on May 18 2019. You will have an answer to your application before the end of the month.
The startups selected and invited to the bootcamp will be financially supported by OCP Group, in particular in terms of return flight tickets and accommodation for the duration of the bootcamp until Demo Day
For the 3 finalist startups, the travel required during the acceleration phase will also be covered by the Group, in addition to the experimentation costs (travel and equipment previously validated) with the Group.
The startups selected at the end of the call for applications will participate in a live bootcamp in Benguerir (in the region of Marrakech, Morocco). These startups will be accompanied to refine their value proposition with the contribution of business and innovation experts.
After the Demo Day, the finalist startups will then be accompanied by experts from our partner Impact Lab. They will have the opportunity to experiment with their solution within OCP Group for 3 months.
Finally, if the proven solution demonstrates its potential, a partnership can be established with OCP Group to deploy the solution.
For the selected startups, starting on June 18 2019: 4 days of bootcamp & Demo Day
During the 3 months following the bootcamp (Between 21 June 2019 and 21 September 2019), for the finalist startups, trips will be planned on the basis of the action plans established during the bootcamp.
At the end of the challenge, three collaboration options are possible. A negotiation between OCP and the start-up will define the best option.
